This Health and Safety policy sets out our commitment to protecting the wellbeing of our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public during all removal and relocation activities carried out in Brixton and surrounding areas. Our aim is to provide a professional, safe and healthy working environment, prevent accidents and work-related ill health, and continuously improve our safety performance.
We recognise our legal and moral responsibility to manage health and safety risks associated with domestic and commercial removals, transport, loading and unloading, packing, storage handling, and associated services. Our objectives are to:
Identify, assess and control risks arising from our work activities.
Comply with applicable health and safety legislation and industry best practice.
Provide safe systems of work for all removal operations.
Ensure that staff are properly trained, competent and supervised.
Engage with workers and customers to promote safe behaviours.
Monitor, review and continually improve our health and safety arrangements.
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with senior management, who ensure that adequate resources, equipment, and training are provided to meet this policy. Management will lead by example, promote a positive safety culture and ensure that health and safety considerations are central to planning all removals work.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for implementing safe working practices on site and in vehicles, carrying out dynamic risk assessments, and ensuring that removal crews follow instructions, wear appropriate personal protective equipment and use handling equipment correctly.
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must co-operate with the company in meeting statutory duties, follow safety procedures, report hazards and incidents promptly, and never interfere with or misuse safety equipment provided.
We carry out formal risk assessments for our core activities, including home and office removals, packing, lifting and carrying, stair work, vehicle loading and unloading, and operations in shared or public spaces. These assessments are regularly reviewed and updated when work methods, equipment or locations change.
For each job, a site-specific assessment is carried out, considering access, parking, internal routes, floor conditions, staircases, lifts, weather, and any vulnerable persons on site. From these assessments, we develop safe systems of work that specify the number of operatives required, the handling equipment to be used, and any special precautions.
All staff must follow these procedures and communicate any new hazards identified during the job so that control measures can be adjusted as needed.
Manual handling is a key risk in removal work. We provide training to all staff in safe lifting techniques, team handling, using mechanical aids and recognising when an item is too heavy or awkward to move without additional support.
Where practicable, we use handling equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, sliders, straps, furniture blankets and ramps to minimise manual effort and reduce the risk of injury. Employees must inspect equipment before use and remove any defective items from service, reporting them to management immediately.
No employee is expected to undertake a lift or task that they believe is unsafe. Concerns should be raised with the team leader, and an alternative method or additional assistance must be arranged.
Safe operation of vehicles is essential to our health and safety performance. Only authorised, licensed and competent drivers may operate company vehicles. Drivers must carry out pre-use checks, report defects, and not drive vehicles they consider unsafe.
We plan routes to minimise risk, taking account of local traffic conditions, access restrictions and parking requirements. Loads must be evenly distributed, properly secured and checked before departure and upon arrival. Doors, ramps and tail lifts must be operated in accordance with training and manufacturer instructions.
Drivers must comply with road traffic laws, speed limits and restrictions, and must not drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any medication that impairs their ability to drive safely.
Whether working from our own premises, at customer homes or at commercial sites, we aim to maintain safe working conditions. This includes keeping walkways clear, managing trip hazards such as loose packaging, using warning signs when appropriate, and protecting flooring and property to prevent damage and injury.
Particular care is taken in shared spaces such as corridors, stairwells, entrances and pavements. Where necessary, we will cordon off areas, use spotters or temporarily restrict access while large or heavy items are being moved.
We are mindful of residents, tenants, employees and visitors at all locations where we provide removal services and will adjust our working methods to reduce disturbance and risk to others.
We provide appropriate personal protective equipment for our removal teams, which may include safety footwear, gloves, high-visibility clothing and other items as identified by risk assessment. Employees must wear and look after the equipment issued to them and report loss or damage so that replacements can be arranged.
All new employees receive induction training, including an introduction to this Health and Safety policy, safe lifting techniques, use of equipment, vehicle and site safety, and emergency procedures. Further job-specific and refresher training is provided as necessary to maintain competence.
Supervisors provide ongoing on-site guidance and coaching, particularly for less experienced staff. Safety information is communicated through briefings, toolbox talks and written instructions, especially when new equipment or procedures are introduced.
All accidents, near misses, injuries and damage incidents must be reported as soon as possible to the responsible person or manager. We investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures are in place for fire, serious injury, road traffic collisions and other foreseeable events. Staff are briefed on what to do in an emergency, including how to safely stop work, evacuate premises if required, and contact the appropriate emergency services.
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, services or legal requirements. We seek feedback from employees and customers to improve our practices and ensure that our removal services throughout the Brixton area are delivered as safely and efficiently as possible.
By working together and following the principles set out in this policy, we aim to maintain a safe environment for our staff, our customers and the wider community during all removal and relocation activities.
